Three Near Term Predictions for the Internet of Things
The Internet of Things is the connection of a wide range of consumer products. Today, millions of people have multiple personal products, including phones, watches, home appliances, and security systems that have Internet connectivity and can share data. While there are many products today that do have connectivity, the Internet of Things is only going to continue to expand rapidly in the coming years and many experts have predictions of where it is heading.
Rapid Increase in Connected DevicesToday, there are around 5 billion products across the world connected to the Internet. While this is a daunting number, the surprising fact is that it has increased more than 10 fold in just the past year. The increase in connected products is expected to continue to increase rapidly in coming years. By the year 2020 it is expected that there will be over 20 billion products with Internet connectivity.
Cities and Public Services Will IncorporateWhile many consumers have continued to acquire and use smart products, public services have been slower to adapt. In the coming decade, this is expected to change as many cities plan to invest in their smart technology and infrastructure. This could provide a wide range of benefits and services to a community that can include faster responses from emergency services, reduced traffic times, and more efficient public transit.
Enhanced SecurityAlong with the increased usage of connected device, the risk of hackers infiltrating data will also increase. To combat this risk, the level of security in all devices will also increase. Home routers will soon become smarter and be able to protect all of your products in your home. Furthermore, individual connected products will have enhanced security features to keep you and your data safe.
