Dynamic Businesses Demand Dynamic Rules Engines
As businesses grow and change, Business Rules System (BRE) can help to create the flexibility needed for success. Business Rules describe a policy or procedure carried out within a Business Process Management System (BPM) via a sequence of operations called the Business Logic. A Business Rules Engine separates the execution code from the Business Rules and Business Logic. In so doing, it allows non-programmers to make changes and additions to the rules and logic within a BPM via several components of the engine, as described below:
- An intuitive interface that allows the user to edit or visualize existing Business Rules, as well as the creation of new ones.
- An accessible central repository of the Business Rules and their definitions.
- An Engine that applies Business Rules to selected data sets.
Thus, a traditionally rigid system of modifications becomes increasingly flexible. The engine itself provides the comfort of a fail-safe against error to the user by evaluating the effect of each new change and notifying the user if a potential conflict arises. Over time, a Business Rules Engine allows its users regain control over rules definitions and authoring. And, in so doing, the BRE reduces user dependence on the IT department for modifications and allows IT professionals to reallocate their time to areas with more added value. The result is an agile, efficient incorporation of user insights and knowledge into a BPM and a more effective use of IT professionals' time.
