How do you get the user to do what you want them to do?  You want them to feel like the smartest person in the world.  You want them to feel like their actions are useful and have value.  You also want them to find the path of least resistance.  You want to make it as easy as possible for them to accomplish their goal while also getting them to do what you want them to do.  If the testing and research that you are conducting can do this then you have accomplished your goal.
