Machine Learning Stretches the Boundaries of AI

Artificial Intelligence is seeing a boom recently, especially in the use of machine learning across a wide variety of industries to help business execution. Initially used almost exclusively for high tech applications, such as machine autonomy, recent implementations as diverse as movie preference analysis show that  machine learning can be used anywhere there is good historical data. If you are considering using artificial intelligence for your business, but aren't really sure how it works, these examples show its capabilities.

Medicine

One of the more promising uses of machine learning has been in medicine. In order to receive the most beneficial results from a machine learning algorithm, you need to provide it with relevant data and medical records are exactly the type of data that artificial intelligence thrives upon. Even within medical industry, the applications of machine learning are broad. For example, researchers in Japan recently used a machine learning algorithm to diagnose stomach cancer. Using an artificial intelligence model similar to ones used in image processing, doctors provided pictures of cancerous and healthy tissue as the input data. The computer was able to correctly identify cancerous tissue 80 percent of the time and healthy tissue 95 percent of the time. Those rates are comparable to results with standard diagnostic practices, but they were completed in millisecond time frames as opposed to days.

Fraud

The use of artificial intelligence in cyber-security is well documented, but it is also very effective in identifying and tracking fraud. This application is very important to businesses, but also to their customer base. With the ability to process an almost infinite amount of data, machine learning algorithms can compare individual transactions to those it has learned to be legitimate, and those it has learned are not. Flagging the fraudulent transactions give businesses the ability to stop them quickly and save money in the long term.

Language Interpretation

It seems obvious that machine learning could be used to interpret foreign languages, but it is also used to help with understanding legal documents. Most legal documents use a maze of words that are often confusing and cause most of us to simply skim them without knowing their true content. Artificial intelligence is able to essentially translate the legal language into simple, plain words that are easier to understand, improving communication when it matters most.

Artificial intelligence, and specifically machine learning, have clear uses across a variety of industries. The ability to use historical data to accurately drive real time decisions gives a clear advantage to those who use it.
